Asansol in West Bengal has once again become a battleground for both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party as the TMC has fielded Shatrughan Sinha and the BJP has fielded MLA Agnimitra Paul. The Lok Sabha by-election for Asansol, necessitated by Babul Supriyo leaving the BJP and as its MP, is due on April 12.

To put up a tough fight, the BJP relied on former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb to campaign for the party in Asansol. Shankar has criticized the law and order situation in Bengal.

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee today campaigned for Sinha at a distance of 3 km in Asansol, a seat held by the BJP for the last 10 years. During the election campaign, he highlighted the issue of hike in fuel prices and said, “Prices are rising everywhere. People from every corner of India are now looking for an opportunity to oust BJP from power. The people of Asansol have got a chance to vote for him. You know why going to Asansol vote because when you voted for your MP here, they tried but could not work properly for the people because of BJP. Babul Supriyo resigned and joined TMC. This election is not a vote to vote but a vote to oppose.”

“BJP has again fielded many people from outside like Ravi Shankar Prasad, Biplab Dev,” he said. Attacking Biplad Dev, Banerjee said, “Go and save Tripura. You don’t allow opposition. My car was attacked several times.”

Banerjee also indicated that more BJP leaders would join the TMC after the Asansol elections. “The notices of ED and CBI cannot control TMC. ‘Khela’ will start from Asansol. When we open the door after this election, you will see how many come.”
