Armed with fish and football, TMC launches ‘Khela Hobe’ campaign to test Goa’s political waters

The Trinamool Congress, gearing up for the Goa assembly polls, has swung into action with a “khela hobe” campaign for February elections, banking on fish and football – the common factor that the state shares with West Bengal.

The party has assigned its Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien and veteran footballer Prasun Banerjee, who are currently working to reduce the TMC’s negligible popularity in the electoral state.

O’Brien and Prasun Banerjee arrived in Panaji on Friday on a week-long tour.

The party’s ardent supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has exuded confidence in both to do research for the party and make its inroads in Goa in the next 10 days.

While Prasun Banerjee is concentrated further northwest of Goa, O’Brien is responsible for the south.

The primary research has been completed by Prashant Kishor’s IPAC, TMC has started its door-to-door campaigns.

Senior TMC leaders are visiting the villages and interacting with the local people.

Meanwhile, sources said that several Congress leaders are in touch with TMC and may join Banerjee’s camp in a few days.

However, TMC has kept silence on the matter.

The TMC may benefit from the anti-incumbency wave against the BJP government in Goa and strict restrictions imposed on beaches.

In addition, TMC has to address issues in the education sector.

The party’s efforts so far have not been able to make a good impression among the voters.
