In the context of the crisis in Afghanistan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Thursday that the armed forces will not allow political turmoil in any other country to affect India.
Birla is on a week-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as part of the ‘Parliamentary Outreach Program for Empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions’.
Birla said that he is visiting the region to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system and democratic institutions. Asked about the recent political crisis in Afghanistan, Birla said India favors a democratic system that is flourishing in all countries.
“We have full confidence in our armed forces that they will not allow political turmoil in any other country (Afghanistan) to affect India,” Birla said. On the recent tensions along the LAC, Birla said, “India is capable of protecting its borders and its people. And the country is against expansionism and cross-border terrorism.”
He further said that due to the expansionist approach of some countries, tensions arise on the border. Birla is scheduled to visit remote areas of Ladakh region including Pangang Lake and Nubra Valley. He will also visit Pahalgaon and Srinagar and interact with Panchayat leaders of all these places.
