Armed criminals loot Rs 29 lakh from cooperative bank in Bihar

Armed criminals committed robbery in broad daylight in Bihar’s Bhagalpur on Thursday and fled with an amount of more than Rs 29 lakh from a government bank.

Senior officials of Bhagalpur police have confirmed the incident. According to the Bihar Police, the incident was carried out in a cooperative bank located at Government Bus Stand on Station Road under Sultanganj police station area.

A police officer posted at Sultanganj police station said that the robbery was being carried out by six armed criminals. “The armed criminals took less than 10 minutes to rob the bank and flee with around Rs 29 lakh from the co-operative bank,” the official said.

The officer further said that the criminals must have conducted a recce of the bank and observed the movement of the officers for some time before committing the robbery. “The bank is located in the premises of a closed government bus stand, which could also be a possible reason why criminals found it as an easy target,” the official said.

A senior police officer posted at Bhagalpur district police headquarters said, “We have informed all nearby police stations about the incident and have also alerted the neighboring district police.”

The officer further said that special teams have been formed to nab all the criminals behind the robbery. “We are checking all the CCTVs installed in the bank and surrounding areas to identify the perpetrators of the dacoity,” the official said.

Co-operative bank manager Sunita Chaudhary told the local language newspaper Hindustan Samachar that about six armed criminals entered the bank and took the bank employees hostage. “All were wearing black masks and were armed with pistols. They took me and another bank employee Ajay Kumar captive at gunpoint and thrashed a bank employee,” Choudhury said.

“The dacoits robbed all the cash kept at the cash counter and fled,” the bank manager said.

On getting information about the incident, Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gaurav Kaur along with other senior officers reached the bank and started investigation in the matter.
