Dr. Tanaya posted a video on her Instagram explaining everything about the little bumps we notice around our nipples. They are called Tubercles and they are extremely okay to have. The doctor also explained that these bumps act as natural moisturisers for the breast and keep them moist and lubricated. She also highlighted the fact that as breasts produce milk after becoming a mother, these tubercles have a unique smell which helps babies to know where the food is. Isn’t it interesting?

- The bumps which are also known as Montgomery’s tubercles are special oil-producing glands in females which are present around the nipples. They keep the nipples soft and lubricated.
- They produce more oil after childbirth which prevents you from infection during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- It promotes feeding by secreting more fluid that attracts your child towards the nipples.
- They might increase in size during pregnancy and look like pimples but do not touch them as it can cause infection. This happens as they keep your nipples and areolas clean and comfortable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
When to worry?
While there is no point in worrying about the bumps, if they start to become itchy and irritated and you start experiencing inflammation, then it can be a sign of infection due to weather or skin disease. If you witness redness around your breast area, go see a doctor immediately.
