New Delhi: The government expressed concern over “misuse and overuse” of COVID-19 drugs as cases driven by the highly permeable Omron variant continue to rise in India.

Addressing a press conference, Dr VK Paul, Member (Health) NITI Aayog said that COVID-19 patients should take Paracetamol for fever in home isolation and Ayush syrup can be used for cough.

“For fever, paracetamol is given, and for cough, Ayush syrup can be used. This is what we have prescribed in the home care module as well. If the cough continues for more than three days, a drug called budesonide can be used. There is an inhaler which is the only three things that need to be done,” Dr VK Paul said.

Apart from this, drink warm water, gargle in home care and take rest.

Dr VK Paul said there were clear guidelines on the use of drugs like dexamethasone and remdesivir for people requiring hospitalisation.

“When we also go to the hospital and need oxygen, the drug is based on clinical judgment – ​​methylprednisolone or dexamethasone. Heparin is also given by doctors inside hospitals… there for remdesivir as well There are clear guidelines. There is no point in giving it at home – it led to overuse, panic and abuse,” he said.

Paul said these protocols were developed by the best experts and “we have genuine concern about drug overuse in the treatment of COVID”.

“Steroid use can increase the chances of mucormycosis. Steroids are very powerful life saving drugs but they also have side effects and they disturb the immune defenses, they disturb many biochemical pathways so that was a huge lesson, ” he adds. ,

Dr VK Paul said, “It is an appeal that the general public should be aware that there is a set of rational treatments listed under the National Protocol-AYUSH and Mainstream Protocols and we should stick to that.”

India added 1,94,720 new infections to Covid-19 cases, taking its tally to 3,60,70,510, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday.

Active cases have increased to 9,55,319, which is the highest in 211 days. The death toll has risen to 4,84,655 with 442 fresh deaths.
