Apple Watch may get a feature to tell if you’re dehydrated – Times of India

Apple A new patent has been granted by US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent deals with checking the hydration level of a person with the help of apple watch, according to a report by Apple patently.
The method described in the patent deals with taking samples of a person’s sweat by measuring one or more electrical properties of sweat with the help of electrodes in the watch. Data collected as electrical properties can be correlated with the concentrations of electrolytes present in sweat. As mentioned, certain electrodes at the base of the Apple Watch dial, located on the inner side of the wrist strap, can trick data collection by measuring electrical properties.
According to the report, “high levels of electrical conductivity of sweat may indicate high concentrations of electrolytes and low levels of hydration” and vice versa. These measurements can then be used to alert the user and provide feedback such as hydration levels in the body while he is engaged in some fitness-related activity.
The data included in the report explains how the process will work. In the figure, the Apple Watch band (#110) is shown with the electrode (#140) located within the cavity (#160) formed in the support structure (#120).

The report states: “Cavities can be recruited within the support structure to make room for sweat to receive. This can be accomplished, for example, by requiring electrodes on the outer surface of the Apple Watch band.” By capillary action to facilitate measurement of sweat without sweat. The cavity further provides known dimensions (e.g., height, width, length, volume) for the sample of sweat. These known dimensions are used to determine the electrical properties based on the given measurements. Each cavity may contain one or more electrodes. Many cavities may be interconnected by channels, for example forming a mesh or network of cavities in fluid communication with each other.
