Kang claims he never signed an NDA, published any anonymous photographs or profited from his information. However, he said he would not post ‘puzzles’ or ‘dreams’ about upcoming devices, so the notice may have had Apple’s intended effect.

Leaks and rumors are part of consumer technology. Every now and then there’s a leak about the upcoming iPhone or next samsung Foldable Smartphone, or the Next google pixel – It’s a daily thing with technical reporting. Now, while leaks are a big part of reporting on consumer technology, they’re an equally big headache for manufacturers, who always keep people from finding out what they’re working on or what they have. However, the efforts have had almost zero effect. Cupertino-based giant Apple has stepped up its approach a bit as the company sent a notice to a Chinese tipster who goes by the name “Kang”.

The leaker posted a notice last week that it had received Apple on the Chinese social media site Weibo. ‘Kang’ is a well-known tipster because the tipster holds the number one spot in AppleTracks, a website that compares the credibility of information shared by various leakers. Kang said a law firm’s letter claimed his actions could have led to the sharing of information with Apple’s competitors, or mislead customers about upcoming devices. The legal notice also included screenshots of his Weibo page showing posts beyond leaks, such as posts where he talks about problems he has had with Apple products. Kang had posted about all four iPhone 12 models ahead of launch, revealing prices, colors and planned release dates.

Kang claims he never signed an NDA, published any anonymous photographs or profited from his information. However, he said he would not post ‘puzzles’ or ‘dreams’ about upcoming devices, so the notice may have had Apple’s intended effect.
