The first touchscreen Macs are likely to use macOS
Apple engineers are actively involved in the development of Macs with touchscreens.
Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is aggressively working on touchscreen Mac technology. Now, a new report says that the first touchscreen Mac could come out as early as 2025. In addition, the first touchscreen Macs are expected to continue to feature traditional laptop designs with trackpads and keyboards.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple engineers are actively developing a Mac with a touchscreen, and one of the first Macs with a touchscreen could be an OLED version of the MacBook Pro. While a standard notebook design will continue to be used, the machine will feature a display that supports touch input like the iPhone or iPad, MacRumors reported.
Gurman also said that the first touchscreen Macs are likely to use macOS, the operating system the Mac will run on. The iPhone maker isn’t looking to mix iPadOS and macOS at the moment.
According to the report, in 2020 Apple software engineering head Craig Federighi said that Apple believes that Mac ergonomics requires the hands to rest on a surface, claiming that there is no way to poke the screen. It’s tiring to raise your hand.
Later in 2020, Federighi stated that a touch-based interface for the Mac had not been considered and that Apple had no secret plans to change the way the Mac worked. The report says that Apple has been debunking claims of touchscreen Macs for nearly a decade.
In related news, Apple reportedly won’t bring the under-display Face ID feature to an iPhone until 2025 or later. According to display analyst Ross Young, the iPhone 15 Pro will not feature the under-display Face ID due to technical issues, reports AppleInsider.
The feature will likely come to the iPhone 17 Pro at the earliest. There have been rumors that the tech giant will be able to hide biometric technology under the display ever since the iPhone X debuted the notch to house its Face ID system.
