Apple is moving forward with its XR headset plans in 2023

The company is expected to share more details about its rumored XR headset at WWDC 2023 in June this year.

Apple is working on a headset that combines augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) into one piece of hardware. The company has not shared any details about this product and when it could possibly launch but going by the recent views of Apple CEO Tim Cook, that date is unlikely to be too far away.

Cook has hinted at Apple’s focus on Mixed Reality (XR) which combines AR and VR but he doesn’t think XR will alienate people and it’s all about the personalized experience. Cook shared Scene In a recent interview with GQ, and he believes that FaceTime is an ideal use case for XR where people can not only chat but also collaborate for different projects.

Apple has been working on an XR headset for some time now but has faced delays, mostly because the company was never quite convinced of its use case. But with 5G networks offering higher data speeds, this should be the ideal time for Apple to lead the charge and show off the XR’s virtues with its rumored product. Cook has had different views on AR, especially when Google was first on the scene with Google Glass and didn’t see the product being successful for various reasons.

But there has certainly been a quick change in his opinion, which he credits to Steve Jobs, who advised him never to be afraid to do a 180 on opinion when you have evidence to suggest the case. Apple has changed its stance over the years, and is one of the biggest 180 to launch a large-screen iPhone, something that would never have occurred to Jobs. But Apple had evidence that big iPhones succeed with other companies easily changing market trends.

Apple has confirmed the dates for WWDC 2023 in June this year, and various reports suggest that the company will not have a product in the flesh, but will certainly talk about its plans and the software powering the device .

The Apple XR headset has seen its production delayed until late 2023, meaning the hardware may not hit the market before mid-2024. Apple is likely to charge a hefty $3000 (roughly Rs. 2.43 lakhs) for the device, which is in line with Cook’s views on AR and where he sees the product fitting in the early years of the segment. Either way, we’re all excited to see when and how Apple plans to move forward with its XR headset launch.
