Based on true events, director Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ is a dramatic version of the events that happened in 1989. The exodus and killings of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s is described from the perspective of a Kashmiri Pandit. Recently during a media interaction, Anupam KherThe one who played Pushkar Nath in the film explained how he portrayed the character and tried to bring the pain and suffering on screen. He also said that just because he himself is a Kashmiri Pandit, things were not easy. In fact, they were a little more difficult.

“It’s very difficult to play a role that you’ve experienced before. Because when you’re doing it as an actor, it’s important not to feel because you’re doing it in the bracket of a film. There are me. There are two sides to this character, as a person and as a movie character. As a person, however much one can relate to a character, you cannot act it, because it is an actor. Everyone feels emotions, but not everyone can act on them,” he said.

He said, “I want to state it here. Just because I’m a Kashmiri Pandit, doesn’t mean I’ll be able to portray that pain brilliantly unless I can project what I’m feeling “

Anupam shared that his character’s name in the film is Pushkar Nath. Incidentally, his father’s name was also the same.

“When I reached Dehradun, the shooting of the film was already going on. I felt like something important was happening, but then suddenly I felt that Pushkar Nath is a very ordinary man who does not know what is happening. Around him. I was representing a completely normal Kashmiri Pandit, something that was my father. That’s where it got difficult for me. How do I separate Anupam Kher’s feelings from the actor? What is real and what is acting ‘Separating was a difficult task. On top of that, it was the stories I heard from my relatives and my mother,” he shared.

“Those were painful feelings that we brushed under a rug. But I’m glad Vivek did this film because when the pain reaches the people watching on screen, I think half the job is done.”

Apart from Anupam Kher, the film, based on the true stories of the victims of the Kashmir genocide, also stars Pallavi Joshi, Prakash Belavadi, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, Bhasha Sumbali, Chinmay Mandlekar, Puneet Issar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Atul Srivastava and Prithviraj Sarnaik. The film has been released in theatres.
