Announcement of CBI probe is not justice: Tribal girl who survived family carnage begins ‘Nyay Yatra’ in MP

Bharti Kasade, the lone survivor of the killing of five members of a tribal family in Dewas district’s Nemawar town in June this year, on Saturday began a ‘Nyay Yatra’. Kasde, who is demanding death penalty for the killers, has started a campaign in collaboration with several tribal leaders and local people. It is expected to reach state capital Bhopal in the next 11 days of March.

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government had recommended a CBI probe into the massacre, but the girl had said she would go ahead with the march as the announcement did not ensure justice.

She reiterated her stand as the yatra began on Saturday and said that justice alone cannot be ensured by the CBI probe and she will continue her fight till her family gets justice. The journey is expected to end at Raj Bhavan in Bhopal. “We were wandering for justice for seven months. Why didn’t the state government announce a CBI inquiry? Why now?” she asked.

After a love affair turned sour, Surendra Rajput, a bahubali from Nemawar town, killed his lover Rupali and her family members including the girl’s mother Mamta, sister Divya and cousins- Pawan and Pooja (both minors) on May 13. and buried them in one. There was a ditch ten feet deep in his field. Rajput and eight others are currently in jail. The strong political ties of the accused got exposed after the police nabbed the accused.

Kasade has said that the monetary compensation was not enough and demanded strict legal action against the perpetrators.

The opposition Congress has targeted the state government and described the incident as an example of increasing atrocities against tribals in the state. Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti, National Convener Dr Hiralal Apart and other leaders are involved in the Nyay Yatra.

According to political analysts, the yatra may clash with the BJP’s tribal program that has been going on in the state for some time.
