‘Andrew Strauss will make great ECB president’

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for the appointment of Andrew Strauss as the new chairman of the team’s cricket board. Strauss is currently attending meetings of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as the Chairman of the Cricket Committee.

ECB chief executive Tom Harrison recently said that England’s Ashes loss provides an opportunity to hit the reset button. The team’s performance in Australia is to be reviewed by the England cricket team’s managing director Ashley Giles and Strauss is also set to examine the report.

Strauss is credited with leading England’s white-ball cricket overhaul, which saw them become ODI world champions in 2019. Vaughn feels he’s the right person to drive the change through.

“Andrew Strauss would make a great chairman of the ECB,” said Vaughan Wire, “I think he’s the person to drive the change through.

“He was here four years ago and after another 4-0 loss to Australia, he wrote a report saying we need better pitches and a different ball in county cricket. Nothing happened, probably because He leaves soon after the tour. He commands respect, and knows exactly what is needed. No county president would look at Strauss and say: ‘Sorry, I’m out of your thoughts on red-ball cricket. I disagree’,” Vaughan said.

Drawing a parallel between England’s disastrous performance in the 2015 ODI World Cup and the Ashes 2021-22 at the hands of Australia, Vaughan feels it is the right time to revive red-ball cricket.

“He (Strauss) knows what needs to happen, and that’s enough. The line in the sand with our white-ball cricket was the 2015 World Cup and this is the moment of red-ball cricket,” Vaughan said.

Another former captain, Mike Atherton, claimed that there is no one better qualified than Strauss to take England cricket forward but that he should be appointed as chief executive Tom Harrison’s successor.

“Harrison is in the final stages of a seven-year term as chief executive, and is expected to leave within the next 12 months,” wrote Atherton. Times, “Strauss is exceptionally capable and should be persuaded to take the job when Harrison leaves. There is no one better qualified in English cricket.”
