Hari Krishna Prasad (63) fell ill on Monday morning, following which Lalitha cremated his body with some discarded cans, old books and pieces of cloth at her house.

In a shocking incident, an elderly woman performed the last rites at her home in Pathikonda village of Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district after her husband passed away due to ill health on Monday. According to police, the woman, Lalitha, is mentally unstable and took the extreme step as the elderly couple was allegedly abandoned by their sons and had no social ties left.

Hari Krishna Prasad (63), who had suffered a stroke in 2016 and was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, succumbed to ill health on Monday morning, following which Lalita, who herself was suffering from depression, carried his body using some discarded cartons. Burned his house. Old books and pieces of cloth.

Police said he also tried to perform the last rites rituals.

Seeing the smoke coming out of the house, the local people informed the police.

Police reached the spot and entered the house by breaking open the doors, where they found the charred body.

“They (the couple) were living alone and no one was taking care of them. He is not poor and has two sons. One works in Medicover (hospital) and the other in Canada,” Superintendent of Police, Kurnool, Krishnakant told PTI.

The couple’s elder son Rajesh is working as a doctor in a private hospital in Kurnool, while younger son Mukesh is working as a software engineer in Canada.

The SP said that both the sons have left their parents and there is some dispute regarding the property.

The couple had a medical shop in the town, which they closed six months ago after Hari Krishna Prasad’s health deteriorated. Although the couple had no financial problems, Lalitha was taking care of her husband on her own for the last six months.

The SP said that Lalita lived away from society and had no one to help her, so she herself cremated her husband’s body.

Kanth said that the police had registered a case, but based on the investigation “from all angles” they did not suspect any conspiracy.
