Andhra: Black balloons released as PM’s helicopter take-off near Vijayawada; 4 Congress workers arrested

Four Congress workers were arrested for allegedly releasing black balloons in the air, as a mark of protest, soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chopper took off from Gannavaram airport near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh. However, the police said that there was no lapse in security.

According to the police, the incident took place 4 km from the helipad, where the PM’s helicopter was to take off. Police said a tight security cordon was set up around the airport as Congress workers called for a state-wide protest due to the PM’s visit.

Krishna district deputy superintendent of police K Vijay Pal said, “Today Congress workers called for a statewide protest against PM Modi. About 4 km from the helipad, four Congress workers released a bunch of black balloons. We arrested him immediately. There was no security breach, adding, “a few more are yet to be arrested.” An investigation is ongoing. The four arrested Congress workers will be produced in the court.

Police said the activists had decided to show black balloons to protest against PM Modi’s visit. Therefore, as a precaution, the police in Krishna district invoked relevant sections of the Police Act and section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, he said.

Police further said that five minutes after PM Modi took off from Gannavaram airport, at a place called Soorampally, Congress workers climbed onto an under-construction apartment and released balloons, Krishna district superintendent of police Siddhartha Kaushal said.
