The stone idol of Umasahita Shiva is the most lying today neglected Event. Sanket Naik, a teacher from Bicholim’s Sal said, “The idol of Umasahita is lying in the open at Badamewadi in Maneri, from where the ruins of the fort have been found. Archaeologist and historian, V.R. According to Mitragotri, the worship of Umasahita sculpture was prevalent in Goa from as early as 700AD to 1300AD. Six Umasahita Shiva idols have been documented from Goa.
The stone idol of Maneri has Shiva and Parvati in both standing and tribhanga postures.
Since the idol is lying in the open, it has deteriorated due to the effect of sun and rain. Shiva’s right hand is broken while the left hand is shown hugging Parvati. Shiva and Parvati are depicted with ear rings, bracelets, armlets and anklets. Shiva has a crown on his head.
“There is an urgent need to protect this historical sculpture depicting the history of pre-Portuguese Goa,” said Sanjay Natekar, heritage lover of Dodamarg.
