AMU student union demands arrest of professor who said Brahma raped his daughter

The BJP Students’ Union on Tuesday staged a protest demanding the immediate arrest and dismissal of an assistant professor. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Medical College for allegedly “insulting” Hindu deities during a class lecture. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) protested at Civil Lines Police Station.

Amit Goswami, the student wing leader, alleged that Dr Jitendra Kumar of AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College had “deliberately conspired to defame Hindu religious sentiments”. Civil Lines Circle Officer of Police S Pandey said that the investigation was going on in the matter. And necessary action will be taken.

AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor had earlier constituted a four-member committee to look into the matter. The professor was earlier suspended after a video clip of a power-point class lecture on the subject of rape went viral on social media last week. Based on the complaint of a young BJP leader, a case was also registered against him at the Civil Lines police station.

Youth had allegedly hurt “religious sentiments” and a show has been released-Cause notice. The professor showed the class a slide show in which he gave a “mythological reference to rape”. According to reports, he taught about rape in India and its historical and religious context during one of his classes.

One of the slides during the lecture talked about Brahma’s impersonation of his daughter, Indra’s sage Gautam, and his wife, Tulsi Vivah: the story of Lord Vishnu raping the wife of King Jalandhar. It also talked about the Nirbhaya rape, Mathura rape case and different types of marriages as per Hindu traditions.

The assistant professor in the department of forensic science later issued an unconditional apology. He said that it was a mistake on his part and further assured that nothing like this would happen in future.
