Amid the turmoil in Sri Lanka, will the Asia Cup be shifted to India? – BCCI President Sourav Ganguly’s reaction

The Asia Cup 2022 is to be held in Sri Lanka in August, but the ongoing turmoil in the country has raised questions on the conduct of the tournament. the former India Captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has said that the board will keep a watch on the situation in the island nation.

During a conversation with news agency ANI, Ganguly said that the board members are monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka. Asked about India’s chances of hosting the tournament, Ganguly decided not to comment on any specifics.

“I cannot comment (about the possibility of India hosting the event) at this point of time. We will keep watch (Sri Lanka situation). Australia is playing there. Sri Lankan team is also doing well. I cannot comment at the moment. Let us wait for a month,” the BCCI president was quoted as saying by ANI.

Recently, Sri Lanka hosted Australia for a month-long bilateral series consisting of 3 T20Is, as many ODIs and 2 Tests; Warne-Fife Trophy. The series proved to be highly competitive as it saw good cricket from both sides. Australia won the T20I series 2-1 while the ODI series was won by the hosts 3-2. The Test series was shared after the two-match series ended in a 1–1 draw.

India will compete in two major ICC events in the coming days – T20 World Cup in 2022 and 50 over World Cup in 2023. Speaking about the high expectations from India in these tournaments, the BCCI President said, “You don’t win ICC tournaments all the time. They (India) were in the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017 and lost in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup. .

“It is not that they have been bad in the World Cup but as you have rightly said whenever India plays the expectations are high. They are a great team, they have some great players and hopefully when it comes to Australia, they stand up and do well.

The BCCI recently bagged a major deal for the TV and digital rights of the Indian Premier League for the 2023-2027 cycle. The TV rights went to Star, while Viacom18 got the digital rights. The Cricket Board of India earned a total of Rs 48,390 crore for 410 matches in the e-auction in June.
