Amid Border Tensions, Chinese FM Qin Gang To Visit India To Attend G20 Meet

Beijing: The Ministry of External Affairs announced here on Tuesday that Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang would visit India this week to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on March 2.

Qin’s visit to India will be the first by a Chinese foreign minister since his predecessor Wang Yi’s visit to New Delhi in 2019 to participate in the Special Representatives’ Dialogue on Border Mechanism.

Wang and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were special representatives.

At the invitation of his Indian counterpart Minister S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister Qin will attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, India on March 2, said the announcement here.

Relations between India and China have almost frozen since the eastern Ladakh military standoff between the two countries in May 2020.

To resolve the impasse, the two countries have held talks between 17 high-level military commanders.

India says that until there is peace in the border areas, its relations with China cannot be normal.

India assumed the chairmanship of the G20 on 1 December last year.

G20 members represent about 85 percent of global GDP, more than 75 percent of global trade, and nearly two-thirds of the world’s population.

Member countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK and USA.
