More than 70 people were killed and many more were trapped under rubble and injured in a devastating tornado that hit Central America on Friday. US President Joe Biden called the disaster ‘the largest tornado outbreak in American history’. A candle factory in Kentucky has been completely destroyed, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said, adding that “there were about 110 people in (the candle factory) at the time the storm hit.”

The tornado also hit a nursing home in Arkansas and blew off the roof of an Amazon warehouse in Illinois, causing some deaths. Another nursing home and a fire station also caused significant damage in Truman, Tennessee. Local media reported that it was the worst tornado to hit Arkansas and land in Kentucky for about 223 miles and was the longest reported tornado in history. According to PowerOutage.US, at least 331,549 utility customers in four states were left without electricity.

Here are some scenes from the tornado:

Kentucky State Trooper Sarah Burgess said rescuers were using heavy equipment to clear debris at the candle factory. Coroners were called to the scene and bodies were recovered, but she doesn’t know how many. She said it could take a day and potentially longer to remove all the debris.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced the creation of a tornado relief fund for the western part of the state and also called on people to donate blood, which is running in short supply during the pandemic.

“There’s going to be a lot of deaths,” Beshear said. “There’s going to be a lot of injuries too.”
