American tech giant Amazon announced the launch of CodeWhisper on June 23 at its Re:Mars conference.
CodeWhisperer is an AI pair programming tool similar to GitHub’s Copilot that can autocomplete entire tasks based on just a comment or a few keystrokes. This tool is the latest addition to the growing field of AI code completion solutions.
The business used its codebase, billions of lines of publicly-provided open-source code, publicly accessible documentation, and publicly accessible code on public forums, to train the system, which at this time included Java, JavaScript. And supports Python.
According to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) blog post, attributed to AWS chief evangelist Jeff Barr: “Trained on billions of lines of code and powered by machine learning, CodeWhisperer has a single goal. Whether you’re a student, a freshman.” Be it a developer, or a seasoned professional, CodeWhisperer will help you be more productive.”
“We are launching in preview form with support for multiple IDEs and languages,” the blog post said. So, it means developers can use it directly inside their favorite IDE.
An IDE, or Integrated Development Environment, allows programmers to simplify the process of creating computer programs.
The post further states that “The preview supports code written in Python, Java and JavaScript using VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm and AWS Cloud9. Support for the AWS Lambda console is under development and It should be ready very soon.”
However, Amazon noted that the algorithm continually analyzes code and comments and even takes into account the programmer’s personal coding preferences and variable names. It will then generate its own unique code snippet using this relevant information and the cursor’s location.
Per the post: “You can use recommendations, or you can extend and customize them as needed. We trained CodeWhisper on billions of lines of code drawn from open source repositories, internal Amazon repositories, API documentation, and forums ( and continued to train).
By submitting a request form, developers who want to test out Amazon’s new code completion tool can sign up for a waiting list.
According to the blog post, developers can install the AWS IDE Toolkit, enable CodeWhisperer functionality, and start using the tool after getting the Preview Access code.
If a developer inputs “#check if a number is a PR,” CodeWhisper will propose the prime word completion, and if the solution is accepted, the AI-powered bot will provide a description and even a Will recommend the entire function, which the developers can accept or change.
Recently, GitHub Copilot, one of CodeWhisperer’s rivals, became generally available. Other contenders include Kite Team Server, which supports more than a dozen languages, as well as Tabin, which enables developers to train AI to complete their code.
Kite, IBM’s Project CodeNet, and DeepMind’s Alphacode are additional contenders in the AI code completion market.
