Amazon announced 10,000 layoffs in November.

Andy Jassy said that the company’s leadership was deeply aware that eliminating these roles was difficult for people and that the company does not take these decisions lightly.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it would cut more than 18,000 jobs from its workforce, citing an “uncertain economy” and the fact that the online retail giant had “hired rapidly” during the pandemic.

“Combining the cuts we outlined in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles,” CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement to his employees. The company had announced 10,000 layoffs in November.

Jassi said the company’s leadership was “deeply aware that these roles are difficult to people, and we do not make these decisions lightly.

“We are working to support those who are affected and are providing a package that includes a severance pay, transitional health insurance benefits and external job placement support,” he said.

Some of the layoffs will take place in Europe, JC said, adding that affected workers will be notified from January 18.

He said the sudden announcement was being made “because one of our partners leaked this information externally.”

“Amazon has weathered uncertain and difficult economies in the past, and we will continue to do so,” Jesse said.

The retailer actually hired with a vengeance during the pandemic to meet the explosion in delivery demand, doubling its global staff between early 2020 and early 2022.

The group had 1.54 million employees worldwide at the end of September, not including seasonal workers recruited during periods of increased activity, particularly the holiday season.
