Amarinder Singh slams Channi government, increases corruption in Punjab in last two months

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday slammed the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government, alleging that corruption has increased in the state in the last two months. He also accused the state government of “playing” on welfare works and claimed that under him, most of the election promises were fulfilled. Amarinder Singh made the remarks while interacting with reporters after inaugurating the new office of his party Punjab Lok Congress in upscale Sector 9 here.

Amarinder Singh had quit the Congress in September this year following his unofficial exit as chief minister after a hard-fought power struggle with Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu. When asked about Channi Sarkar’s claims, Amarinder Singh said that he laughs at full page advertisements in newspapers. “They’re just pretending. They know very well that nothing is going to happen and the model code of conduct will be implemented in just two weeks.

The former CM alleged, “Corruption has increased in the state in the last two months.” Amarinder Singh said that when he was the Chief Minister, his government fulfilled 92 per cent of the election promises which no other government has achieved so far. He claimed that only Chandrababu Naidu’s government in Andhra Pradesh fulfilled 83 per cent of the promises.

Responding to a question on illegal sand mining, Amarinder Singh said that when he was the Chief Minister, he had constituted a special task force to probe it. Referring to the illegal mining carried out by AAP in Chamkaur Sahib, the former CM said, “Yesterday, it was found in the CM’s constituency.” Asked about the Special Task Force’s report on drug menace, he said it was for the Channi government to decide whether to make the report public.

On the issue of sacrilege, he said that when he was the chief minister, he had constituted a special task force to investigate these cases. “These matters are ongoing. I have done my duty. What happens in the High Court and in the District Court, it is for the Punjab government to request the High Court (for speedy disposal of the matter),” He said. Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party, Singh questioned why its MLAs are leaving their party if it claims to be strong on the ground. I was referring to joining Congress.

Responding to a question on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he said, “We don’t want a man like him in Punjab. He’s a very sneaky character, he needs to be there. On Akalis’ apprehension that Bikram Singh Majithia might be implicated in the drug case by the Congress government, he said, “What I understand is that they are trying to make an issue out of showing Majithia by arresting him.” “This is a country which has one constitution, one law. Do you think we didn’t check for four years? You can’t arrest people. They were after me, asking me to catch them, send Badal, Majithia behind bars. You must have evidence and sufficient evidence to arrest and prosecute a person.” Amarinder Singh’s son Raninder Singh and daughter Jai Inder Kaur were also present on the occasion.

Many supporters of Amarinder Singh from Patiala also participated in this program. Responding to a question, Raninder said he would work with the party and would not contest the upcoming assembly elections.

Asked what would be his party’s election issue, Amarinder Singh said, “We have got a very good team, they are working on it.” The first draft has come to me, then we will put it before the public.
