Normalcy was restored in Andhra Pradesh’s Amalapuram town on Wednesday, where massive arson broke out in protest against the move to rename the new Konaseema district after BR Ambedkar. We have registered seven cases and have detained more than 40 miscreants. We have deployed a force of over 2,000 personnel under the supervision of two Additional Director Generals of Police. State Director General of Police KV Rajendranath Reddy told PTI that the situation in the district is normal now.

He said the police were probing what led to the violence on Tuesday. We are analyzing the CCTV footage and other evidence. The DGP said that we will punish the guilty.

The move to rename the newly-formed district sparked arson in Amalapuram on Tuesday evening, with protesters protesting the renaming and setting houses of state minister P Vishwaroopu and ruling YSR Congress MLA P Satheesh on fire. Some buses were also torched in the city, while over 20 policemen, including senior officers, were injured in stone pelting by the mob.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were imposed in the city to pacify the crowd and restore order. Today, protesters tried to stage dharnas at Amalapuram, Ravulapalem, Ambajipeta, Kandriga and other places, but the police foiled the attempt.
