‘Always encouraged Gulf countries for ex-gratia payment’: External Affairs Minister on monetary assistance to NRIs

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said on Thursday that there is a provision in the Indian Community Welfare Fund to deal with situations like deaths.

Dr Jaishankar, who was commenting on monetary assistance to the kin of NRIs who died abroad due to COVID-19, said its use was expanded in 2017.

“We have always encouraged the Gulf countries for ex-gratia payments to be made by the government or employers,” he told the Rajya Sabha, reported ANI.

The budget session of 2022 had earlier started on January 31 with President Ram Nath Kovind’s address to both the Houses of Parliament.

The first part of the budget session, which will continue till February 11, will have 10 sittings.

The second part of the session will start from March 14 after a month’s break and will end on April 8 with 19 sittings.

Both the Houses of Parliament will work in shifts with a view to ensuring the Kovid safety protocol.

Proceedings in Lok Sabha will be held from 4 pm to 9 pm

Zero Hour (the time when Members of Parliament can raise issues of urgent public importance), which usually lasts for an hour, has been reduced to 30 minutes in the Rajya Sabha this time.

Earlier in the day, the Union Health Ministry informed that under the nationwide vaccination campaign, more than 167 crore 87 lakh doses of Kovid vaccine have been given in the country so far.

India’s active caseload currently stands at 15,33,921, with 1,72,433 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the ministry said.
