Journalist Mohammad Zubair, the co-founder of fact-checking website AltNews, has been arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police. Zubair is accused of hurting religious sentiments. Police has arrested him under section 153/295 of IPC.

Protests erupted across the country over alleged controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Kumar Jindal, with violence erupting in some places. Allegedly, these demonstrations were also fueled by the co-founder of Alt News, Mohammad Zubair.

Delhi Police said – enough evidence for arrest
On behalf of the Delhi Police, it was said that the photo was posted on social media on behalf of Zubair deliberately against a particular religious community, causing unrest among the people. There is enough evidence against Zubair to spread hatred among the people. Based on this, he has been arrested.

Questions raised on police action
AltNews co-founder Prateek Sinha has questioned the police action. Sinha says that Delhi Police had called for questioning in another case, but the arrest has happened in another case. He said that no notice was even given to Zubair for the second case. Despite repeated requests, we are not even being given a copy of the FIR.

Prateek has claimed that Zubair is being taken to some unknown place after medical examination. The policemen have not even put their name tag. Zubair’s lawyers are not being informed about this. According to Prateek, they are also in the police van.

Rahul Gandhi condemned the arrest
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has condemned the arrest of Zubair. He said in the tweet that whoever exposes the hatred, bigotry and lies of BJP, every such person becomes a threat to them. He said that truth always triumphs over tyranny. Thousands more will come to the fore if one person who raises the voice of truth is arrested.

Owaisi also came in support
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the arrest of Mohammad Zubair is highly condemnable. He has been arrested in an unknown FIR without any notice. This is a violation of the law. He further said that Delhi Police does not take any step against those who raise hateful slogans, but takes action against those who bring out the truth.
