On December 9, 1948, the United Nations adopted the first human rights treaty, the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the “Genocide Convention”). 2022 is its 74th anniversary.
The Convention reflects the commitment of the international community to prevent the crimes of genocide. It also provided the first international legal definition of “genocide”, which was widely adopted nationally and internationally, as well as establishing a duty on state parties to prevent and punish the crime of genocide.
In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 9 December as the International Day of Remembrance and Honor for the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and the Prevention of the Crime.
