Director Shaunak Sen took to Instagram and posted the first post of his film All That Breathes losing to Daniel Rohr’s Navalny at the 95th edition of the Academy Awards. It was nominated in the Best Documentary Feature Film category. More than a day after the Oscars, the director posted pictures from the ceremony and in one of them, he even showed the letter ‘L’ on his forehead as a sign of his defeat.

Shaunak took to his Instagram handle and wrote a long note along with a series of pictures. He wrote, “So many messages of encouragement/support from yesterday. We were down for about an hour but we were soon distracted by the equanimity between the glittering people and things. Brain still getting around the fact to wrap up.” That this is the end of this chapter.”

He further added, “Going forward we will be working hard to figure out India distribution (HBO has ended its deal with Hotstar in India, and we are figuring out on which platforms it will come now). For, it was great to share this bizarre, bloated day with so many brothers and so many members of our crew. Many congratulations to all the winning films from India.”

“All That Breathes” is a Delhi-set documentary that follows two siblings, Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shahzad, who dedicate their lives to rescuing and treating injured birds, especially black kites Is. The critically acclaimed film had previously won the ‘World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary’ at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and the Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

While it missed out on the Oscars 2023, India brought home the coveted award in two different categories. SS Rajamouli’s RRR song Naatu Naatu won the original song category at the Oscars. The Elephant Whispers by Guneet Monga won the Best Documentary Short Film award.
