Counting day in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura: The counting of votes for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura assembly elections will take place today amid tight security. Assembly elections were held in Tripura on 16 February while in Meghalaya and Nagaland on 27 February. The counting of votes will start at 8 am.

Tripura recorded nearly 90 per cent voter turnout in the polls held on February 16, while Meghalaya and Nagaland recorded 76 per cent and 84 per cent, respectively.

Sources said Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati ahead of the counting day.

Sarma, who heads the BJP-led Northeast Development Alliance (NEDA), met Sangma at a hotel in Guwahati on Tuesday night, they said.

A source told PTI, “Sangma was in Guwahati last night and his friend Sarma came and met him at the hotel.

Ahead of the results, re-polling was conducted at four polling stations in Nagaland on Wednesday.

Re-polling was conducted at New Colony polling station in Zunheboto constituency, Pangti V in Sanis constituency, Jaboka village in Tijit constituency and Pathso East wing in Thonokanya constituency, the official said.

In Nagaland, the NDPP-BJP alliance is seeking a mandate for a second term, with Neiphiu Rio being the alliance’s chief ministerial candidate.

A total of 352 candidates contested for 59 seats each in Nagaland and Meghalaya.

“All necessary arrangements have been made regarding tomorrow’s vote counting. We have 13 counting centers across the state, 12 in all district headquarters, one in Sohra sub-division. 22 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies with the objective of ensuring The 24X7 security protocol in respect of strong rooms containing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) polling 3,419 polling stations in 59 assembly constituencies and for any post-poll contingencies/contingencies will remain in place till April 4, said Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer FR Kharkongor.
