Alia University VC abused for changing PhD list, student leader arrested

A student leader had allegedly verbally abused and threatened Aliah University Vice-Chancellor Muhammad Ali. He was arrested on Sunday. This has come to the fore after a video of student leader Gyasuddin Mandal humiliating the VC surfaced online. After this, Ali sought help from the police, however, he claims that they did not help him. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has sought a detailed update from the Chief Secretary by Monday afternoon after the viral video.

A university official said the incident took place on Friday at the New Town campus of Aaliyah University. Mandal and some others went to the Vice-Chancellor’s office and reportedly asked him to immediately change the PhD list and add to the list recommended by him. He also threatened the VC of dire consequences. Ali told reporters that Mandal and some others gheraoed him inside his office for a few hours and used abusive language.

After Ali asked the students to leave the office and come back later for a proper discussion, Mandal and his colleagues kept on abusing them as some staff threw a circle around them. The abusers allegedly stayed in the VC’s chamber for hours and threatened to return if the list was not amended. The students have accused the university administration of molestation.

The accused was arrested from New Town under Techno City police station area on Sunday afternoon on charges of “verbal abusing, physically confining and making threatening gestures to the VC”, an official said.

“Police reacted quickly with respect to the recent incident at Aaliya University and Jiyasuddin Mandal has already been arrested. The investigation proceeds,” West Bengal Police tweeted.

“The Chief Secretary has been asked to send a full update by 1 PM tomorrow on the worrying scenario seen in the video in the viral circulation. A situation where law-abiding rogue elements make their way without fear of law is certainly a horrific scenario for law-abiding people,” tweeted Dhankhar, the university’s ex-officio chancellor.

Mandal was earlier expelled by the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad. TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya said Mandal was expelled from the student union a few years ago for physically harassing her inside and outside the campus. “We condemn the incident. Those who abuse the VC should be punished. This is not our culture,” he said.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said in a Bengali tweet, “This is not the only incident under the rule of the daughter of Bengal. This is now the culture of the state. The VC said that the police did not come to his rescue. This is expected as the police will not arrest those who put their hands on the heads of influential TMC leaders.”

Nirufa Khatoon, a student of the institution, said that there are many complaints from the students, but the conduct of Mandal, who is no longer a student of Alia University, is condemnable.
