Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi Receives UA Certificate From CBFC

New Delhi: Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starring Alia Bhatt, has acquired a UA certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The film has been approved by the Board with minimal changes.

Notably, Gangubai Kathiawadi is Bhansali and Bhatt’s debut collaboration, and anticipation for the film is building as its release date approaches.

According to a news source in India Today, the film had to undergo minimal changes before receiving a UA certificate from the CBFC. The source also alleged that a scenario in which the then-Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, is presenting Gangubai a rose has been changed.

The CBFC issued the makers the UA certificate after four substantial alterations were made to the film’s initial version. According to the reports, the first alteration was that an abusive term was substituted with ‘madarjaat.’ The complaint said that a 17-second-long conversation and graphics were eliminated without detailing the event.

The story of Gangubai Kathiawadi centers around a teenage girl in Kamathipura, Mumbai, who becomes a notorious brothel madam after overcoming adversity in her life. It is based on the novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai by noted writer Hussain Zaidi.

Interestingly, Gangubai Kathiawadi is Bhatt and Ajay Devgn’s second collaboration; they will also be seen together in SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which is set to be released on March 25.

The filmmaker and his crew recently traveled to Berlin for the international premiere of their film. Gangubai Kathiawadi will hit the theaters on February 25.
