Albert Einstein’s rare 54-page handwritten manuscript to fetch millions at Paris auction

A rare manuscript by theoretical physicist Albert Einstein goes under the hammer in Paris on Tuesday, with auctioneers aiming for a stratospheric price tag.

According to Christie’s, which hosted the sale on behalf of the Aguts auction house, the manuscript, which contains preliminary work for Einstein’s major achievement in the theory of relativity, is estimated to cost between two and three million euros (2.3–3.4 million).

“This is undoubtedly the most valuable Einstein manuscript to ever come up at auction,” Christie’s said in a statement.

The 54-page document was handwritten in Zurich, Switzerland in 1913 and 1914 by Einstein and his colleague and confidante, Swiss engineer Michel Besso.

Christie said that it was thanks to Beso that the manuscript was preserved for posterity.

Christie said it was “almost like a miracle”, as the German-born genius was unlikely to regard himself as a simple working document.

Today, the paper offers “a fascinating dip into the mind of the greatest scientist of the 20th century.”

Einstein, who died in 1955 at the age of 76 and is considered one of the greatest physicists of all time, revolutionized his field with the theory of relativity and made major contributions to the theory of quantum mechanics.

He won the Nobel Physics Prize in 1921 and was later adopted by pop culture as a genius scientific icon, helped by his trademark unruly hair, mustache, and bushy eyebrows.
