Laboratory reports suggest that samples of ducks sent from Purakkad in Kerala’s Alappuzha district have tested positive for bird flu.

Officials confirmed that the report came from the Bhopal-based laboratory of the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases where the samples tested positive for H5N1 influenza virus.

As a result, state veterinary officials have directed the Thakazhi village council to cut birds and 10 teams have been formed for the same. According to reports, this virus can spread rapidly through the air, but its effect on humans is less.

Incidentally, this is a big setback especially for the duck farmers in Alappuzha district as the Christmas season is approaching, there is a huge demand for duck with chicken.
