Air Pollution Live Updates: At 386, Delhi’s AQI improves from ‘severe’ to ‘very poor’ category

Air Pollution Live Updates: Delhi’s overall air quality index (AQI) saw an improvement on Sunday morning at 386. According to SAFAR, the air quality forecasting agency of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the AQI was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category at 6:54 am. The air quality in the national capital on Saturday remained in the ‘severe’ category with an AQI at 437. The 24-hour average AQI was recorded at 471 on Friday, which is the worst ever level in the season. The AQI was 411 on Thursday and 372 on Wednesday.

An AQI between zero and 50 is ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 and 500 ‘very poor’ considered serious.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘severe’ category for the third day in a row on Saturday, recording a 24-hour average air quality index of 437, a slight improvement from the day before. The air quality index of neighboring Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, Greater Noida was no better at 441, 441, 423, 464 and 408 respectively.

The Supreme Court suggested a lockdown in Delhi as it asked the Center and the Delhi government to take immediate measures to improve the air quality. The court said that the pollution situation is so bad that people are wearing masks inside their homes.

Later in the day, the Delhi government announced a set of guidelines in the coming days after an angry top court termed the increase in pollution an “emergency”.

• Schools, colleges and educational institutions in Delhi will remain closed for physical classes for a week from Monday due to deteriorating air quality. Online education will continue in schools and colleges. Schools in Delhi had reopened for all classes from November 1, after nearly 19 months of closure due to COVID-19.

• The meteorologist has predicted mainly clear skies and moderate fog in the morning hours on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 26 and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively.

• According to SAFAR, the AQI is likely to improve in the next two days as the winds are slowing down at the transport level (925 mb) resulting in less infiltration of fire-related pollutants into Delhi. “However, as local winds are calming and minimum temperatures decrease further, preventing efficient dispersal of pollutants, air quality may improve to the upper end of the very poor category or the lower end of the severe category.” has been,” it said.

• In the last 24 hours, the number of farm fires was recorded at 3,157, which is 31 per cent of Delhi’s pollution as on Saturday.
