AIIMS Bhubaneswar Conducts Successful ‘Rare’ Quadruple Joint Replacement Surgery; PM Modi Says ‘Doctors Making us Proud’

New Delhi: AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Sunday (February 12, 2023) said that it conducted a successful quadruple joint replacement surgery on a crippled patient from Kendrapara district. According to an official statement, the doctors performed hip and knee joint surgery on the 37-year-old woman in a single setting. The woman was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with severe pain in knees and hip joints.

The statement said she was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and was on several medications.

“Unfortunately, she was crippled by severe arthritis of the hips and knees,” the doctors said.

A senior doctor said, “The patient walked with the help of walking aids and with extreme difficulty. There was no movement in the hip joint and very little movement in both the knees. She needed replacement surgery on all four joints.”

The patient was assessed by a team of doctors and surgery was planned on both the hip and knee joints in the same setting.

The doctor said that performing a four joint replacement in one setting presents several challenges to the patient and the surgeon.

“Bleeding and surgical stress on the patient was assessed with blood parameters during surgery. Hip replacements were done first followed by knees. The surgery could be completed in three hours. The patient was managed in ICU for two days was done and adequate pain relief was provided,” he said.

The female patient started walking on the third day after the surgery and was happy with the result. Due to proper team management, young age and no comorbidities, the patient was operated successfully.

Second case to be reported globally

This is the second case to be reported globally and first of its kind in Odisha where all four couples were converted in one setting.

Dr Sujit Kumar Tripathi and Dr Mantu Jain were the lead orthopedic surgeons and the anesthesia team was led by Dr Shritam Swaroop Jena

Professor Ashutosh Biswas, executive director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said such surgeries are “rare”.
