Top AIADMK leader K Palaniswami on Wednesday demanded that Chief Minister MK Stalin inform people about what is stopping the DMK regime from not implementing the assurance of bringing petrol and diesel under the GST regime in the assembly elections. Palaniswami said during his tenure as the Leader of the Opposition, Stalin had said several times that petroleum products should be brought under the purview of GST.

AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister said that senior DMK leader and party treasurer TR Baalu in an interview to a Tamil news channel said that bringing petrol and diesel under GST was featured in his party’s 2021 election manifesto. “Balu has clearly stated that the central government should bring petrol and diesel under GST. He has said that he will reduce the prices of petroleum products from Rs 40 to Rs 50,” Palaniswami said in a statement. He said that when Balu himself has recommended bringing petrol and diesel under the purview of GST, then Chief Minister MK Stalin should tell the people what is stopping him from not implementing the assurances made before the assembly elections.

Palaniswami said news reports quoting the Union Finance Ministry said that only Tamil Nadu and West Bengal opposed bringing the fuel under GST, while most others, including union territories, supported it. The AIADMK leader alleged that the DMK regime had not even taken the “first step” to fulfill its assurances, including those that would bring economic benefits to the people of Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK government had given Pongal gifts of Rs 2,500 to the people (2021, January) and the DMK has not taken any such step so far, he said, adding that it has made common and poor people “angry”.
