AIADMK in limelight after massive defeat in Tamil Nadu rural local body elections

The AIADMK’s morale has been hit by a massive defeat in the rural local body elections in nine districts of Tamil Nadu and the party will have to rework its strategy to retain its position as the DMK’s main rival in the state.

Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has announced that DMK has won or is leading in 138 out of 140 Zilla Panchayat Union seats, with AIADMK winning just 2 seats. Among the panchayat union ward member seats, the DMK has won or is leading in 1,009 seats, while the AIADMK has only 218 of the 1,381 seats.

AIADMK workers privately admit that the party’s performance has been poor due to splits among the top leadership and lack of proper strategy. Party workers believe that the main issue of AIADMK during MGR and Jayalalithaa’s time was the strong stand of the anti-DMK party, but in the last five years after Jayalalithaa’s death, the AIADMK has conceded its defeat. plots.

M. Selvapandi, a local-level AIADMK functionary at Pammal in Chengalpattu district, told IANS: “We have lost our plot in the rural local body polls, but I am sure the party will come back to power in the next assembly polls. Execute the strategy properly. Will have to work again and our campaign did not work well among the masses. AIADMK as a political party has always avoided anti-DMK rhetoric and it has been missing since last five years which has demoralized the workers.

The AIADMK’s major campaign was the failure of the DMK government to scrap the NEET exam as promised in its election manifesto, but the results showed that it had no impact on the people.

In the last five months since assuming power on May 7, the DMK government has been fulfilling its election promises one by one and it is likely to fulfill nearly 200 promises for the 2021 assembly elections. This was a major issue in the DMK’s campaign for rural local body elections.

Director of the Socio-Economic Development Foundation, a Madurai-based think tank, R. Padmanabhan told IANS, “AIADMK has to rework itself and the differences between top leaders, OPS and EPS are reflected in the performance of the party. The cadres lost the plot. There were clear indications that the party had made its mark. The conspiracy is lost but the leaders did not take it seriously during the election and its cost is very high.
