Since the installation of the AI machine, the quality of food has increased and the BMI of the children has also improved, said the project director

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is slowly entering and revolutionizing human lives. Who could have thought that artificial intelligence could also determine the nutritional level of food items served to tribal students? Recently in Maharashtra, an AI-powered machine has been installed at Todasa Ashram School in Etapalli, which aims to improve the nutrition level of tribal children of Gadchiroli. Within a fraction of a second, the machine determines the nutritional status of the food served.

The AI-based machine takes a picture of the student with a plate of food and identifies the quality of the food without any human intervention. If it is installed across the country, it can be a game changer for India to improve its ranking in food safety parameters. The initiative involves eight tribal schools in Maharashtra and is under the Bhamragarh project.

Speaking to ANI, Shubham Gupta, Assistant Collector of Etapalli and Project Director of Integrated Tribal Development Project, said, “Under Project Bhamragarh, there are eight government schools. When I used to come to this all-girls ashram school, I used to feel that they were nutritionally deficient. When we did a preliminary BMI analysis, we found that 61 of the 222 girls were undernourished. Three meals a day are served here – breakfast, lunch and dinner. The quantity of food is up to the mark, and we also follow the menu. So, we wanted to find out the reason.”

The project director said that since the installation of the AI machine, the quality of food has increased and the BMI of the children has also improved. Explaining the initiative, Shubham Gupta with the help of an NGO has installed this AI machine in one of the government aided schools and tried to implement improvements in both quantity and quality. The assistant collector said, “We have installed it in one of the 8 ashram schools so far. The results are very positive. We installed it in September 2022. Since then the quality of food has improved and the BMI of the children has gone down.” has also improved.”
