Ahmedabad: Councilors want ‘illegal non-vegetarian shops’ to be closed. Ahmedabad News – Times of India

Ahmedabad: Jain Vakil, chairman of the revenue committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), on Saturday wrote a letter to Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar, demanding the removal of all illegal activities. Non-vegetarian food outlets.
The lawyer says that “illegal non-vegetarian food joints near educational institutions, religious places should be removed as the stench emanating from such joints causes problems to the passersby”.
The lawyer claimed that the meat of illegally slaughtered animals was being sold in public places. “The civic body should take action against such outlets under the provisions of the GPMC Act such as sections 331(2), 334, 376(6), 382(b) and 335,” the letter said.
Section 331(2) says, “No person shall enter into a private market for the sale of, or to expose for sale, any article of animal food intended for human food, or human food or livestock or food for livestock.” Establish or maintain a private slaughterhouse without the sanction of the Commissioner, who shall be guided in granting such sanction by the decisions of the Corporation.
“The illegal non-vegetarian food outlets are hurting the religious sentiments of the people and are also against the Indian culture,” the lawyer wrote.
These provisions prohibit private markets and private slaughterhouses, import of cattle without the license of the Commissioner and empower the Commissioner to remove any non-vegetarian shops and slaughterhouses operating without the permission of the Commissioner.
On September 30, the civic body announced a drive across the city against illegal ‘non-vegetarian’ food carts, which are plying without valid municipal food vending licences. Egg-makers were also included in the ‘non-vegetarian’ food carts.
