Queen Ahilyabai Holkar ruled for nearly three decades and was given the title ‘The Philosopher’s Queen’ by a British historian, John Keyes.

Born on May 31, 1725 in Chaudi (present-day Ahmednagar) village in Maharashtra, the 297th birth anniversary of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, who is considered one of the finest female rulers in Indian history. His father, Mankoji Scindia (Shinde), a descendant of the Dhangar family, was the Patil of the village. At a time when women were not allowed to go to school, Ahilyabai’s father taught her to read and write.

Some interesting facts about the brave queen of Malwa are as follows:

  1. On his way to Pune, Malhar Rao Holkar, a commander of Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the Malwa region, saw an eight-year-old Ahilyabai serving a temple to the hungry and the poor. Impressed by him, she married his son Khanderao with him in 1733.
  2. In 1745, Ahilyabai was blessed with a son, Male Rao, but died at the age of 19.
  3. In 1748, he broke social norms by marrying his daughter to Yashwantrao – a poor but a brave man.
  4. In 1754, her husband was killed in the Battle of Kumbher, leaving her a widow at the age of 29. But she was forbidden to do sati by her father-in-law, who became her pillar of support.
  5. After the death of Malhar Holkar, his son was installed as the king and after his death Ahilyabai ascended the throne and became the ruler of Indore on 11 December 1767.
  6. Ahilyabai was a courageous warrior and a formidable archer. She used to fight on the back of an elephant. He always protected his territory for many years with the Bhils and Gonds who were always ready to attack.
  7. Ahilyabai ruled for nearly three decades and a British historian John Keyes gave her the title of ‘The Philosopher’s Queen’. In her praise, he said: “Ahilyabai Holkar, the philosopher-queen of Malwa, was clearly a sharp observer of the wider political landscape.”
