Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s Telangana tour, banners challenging him for drug test emerge in Hyderabad

Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Telangana, banners were seen around Hyderabad asking if he was ready to accept the ‘white challenge’ (drug tests) by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) working president, KT Rama Rao. The white challenge was started by Congress MP Revanth Reddy in September 2021.

Earlier, in September 2021, Congress MP Revanth Reddy alleged that the drug menace in Hyderabad was growing, and called for politicians and celebrities to volunteer themselves for a drug test under the ‘white challenge’. One person can nominate three others for the challenge after accepting the test.

“To create awareness in the youth on increasing drug menace in the country I have started the #WhiteChallenge and @KVishReddy has graciously accepted both of us will be waiting for @KTRRTS at Amaraveerula Stupam today at noon,” tweeted Revanth Reddy.

He had challenged KTR and entrepreneur-politician K Vishwaeshwar Reddy to join him for this test. Vishwaeshwar Reddy was a TRS MP who had quit the party over differences with Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

Accepting the challenge, Vishwaeshwar Reddy said, “I am against drugs not only as a social activist but also as a PARENT. Drugs have become prevalent in Telangana. Many rich kids are taking drugs and they are ruining their lives. Now drugs are spreading across society ruining families & society.”

Reacting to the challenge, Minister KTR dragged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi back into the fray, while simultaneously taking potshots at MP Revanth Reddy, calling him a ‘Cherlapally jail alumni’.

KTR put out a tweet saying, “I am ready for any test & will travel to AIIMS Delhi if Rahul Gandhi is willing to join. It’s below my dignity to do it with Cherlapally jail alumni. If I take the test & get a clean chit, will you apologise & quit your posts? Are you ready for a lie detector test on #Note4Vote.”

KT Rama Rao also warned that, if required, the Telangana government will register sedition cases against those making baseless against Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao or the government.
