In a question paper released by it, students have been asked to write a note on “Azad Kashmir”.

ABTA general secretary Sukumar Paine accepted the existence of such question in the test papers of the association. “But the syllabus of the board itself has reference to the matter. There is also a reference to the matter in the books approved by the state government. Since there is controversy in this matter, it would have been better if the related question was not there in our test paper.”

Meanwhile, the controversy over the question in the WBBSE test paper has reached the central level, with the Union Ministry of Education sending a communique to the state education department seeking explanatory comments on the matter.

The release said that the issue of “Azad Kashmir” is a very sensitive issue and the Central Government does not recognize ‘Pakistan Occupied Kashmir’ as “Azad Kashmir”.

Realizing the seriousness of the matter, the State Education Department has started an internal inquiry into the matter. A total of nine teachers have been identified and cautioned in this matter by the WBBSE, sources said.

Of the nine cautioned teachers, six are members of the history syllabus committee of the board.

A letter of caution has also been sent to Ramakrishna Mission headmaster Vivekananda Vidyamandir, whose exam paper contained a controversial question on “Azad Kashmir”.
