IND v AUS, BGT 1st Test: Steve Smith was clean bowled by Ravindra Jadeja after hailing a similar delivery earlier in his innings.

Ravindra Jadeja wreaks havoc on Australian batsmen on Day 1 of the opening Test of the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Vidarbha Cricket on Thursday at the Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur.

After sending back Marnus Labuschagne and Peter Handscomb for golden ducks, Jadeja clean bowled Steven Smith for his third wicket.

Jadeja lofts it on a length on the off stump as Smith moves to play for the turn, which never comes. The ball went through the arm, between Smith’s bat and pad and went to the off stump.

After his dismissal, Smith was shocked and stood in complete astonishment, almost unable to comprehend what had just happened.

Earlier, he had appreciated Jadeja’s similar delivery which narrowly missed the stumps by showing an exaggerated ‘thumbs up’.

Smith and Labuschagne fought back to help Australia recover from losing their openers to reach 76-2 at lunch. Labushen and Smith reunited after the early dismissals of Usman Khawaja and David Warner on a Nagpur pitch that was expected to turn vicious.

Seamer Mohammad Siraj trapped Khawaja lbw for one run on his first ball, coming in as a left-handed batsman after the tourists won the toss and elected to bat first.

An appeal was turned down by the on-field umpire but India Successfully reviewed the decision, much to the delight of coach Rahul Dravid, who raised his fists in the pavilion.

Mohammed Shami soon made noise in the next over when the seamer bowled left-handed Warner for a single, which came in to send the off-stump cartwheeling around the wicket.

Spin was introduced in the seventh over with left-arm orthodox Ravindra Jadeja returning to the side from a knee injury.

Labuschagne and Smith were cautious in their approach as some of the turning balls flew off their bats on a dry pitch.

Labuschagne, the world’s number one Test batsman, hit eight fours. Smith avoided missing a catch for six runs Virat Kohli Failed to capitalize on the opportunity found in the slip.

Australia, led by Pat Cummins, dropped left-armer Travis Head and made his international debut for off-spinner Todd Murphy.

Rohit Sharma-led India handed Test caps to Twenty20 sensation Suryakumar Yadav and wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat.
