Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki on Tuesday demanded a separate room for offering Namaz in the UP Assembly. The SP MLA has put the demand of prayer room in front of State Assembly Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit.
“As happened in Bihar (a separate room was given for namaz), and we are hearing the demands in Maharashtra as well. Mostly during assembly proceedings we have to go midway to offer namaz, so there should be a separate prayer hall where namaz can be offered,” said Irfan Solanki.
“Small room will suffice. We will not miss (assembly) proceedings either. It will neither harm nor cause any trouble.’
This statement has come at a time when the assembly elections will be held in the state next year and there is a dispute going on in Jharkhand over the allotment of Namaz hall in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly.
The Jharkhand government on Thursday issued an order to set aside a room in the new assembly complex for Muslims to offer prayers, which was criticized by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for setting up a temple for the Hindu deity Hanuman. There was a demand for space in the building.
BJP MLAs created ruckus in the assembly over the allocation. Before the session for the day began, the BJP MLAs sat on the stairs at the entrance of the assembly, chanting Hanuman Chalisa and ‘Hare Ram’ with placards.
As the day’s proceedings began, BJP members came to the well raising slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and demanded withdrawal of the order relating to allotment of Namaz halls.
