After seven members of Bengal’s Ranji squad, CAB president Avishek Dalmiya tests positive for Covid-19

Cricket Association of Bengal President Avishek Dalmiya has tested positive for Covid-19 just a day after seven members of Bengal’s Ranji Trophy team contracted the virus. Avishek, son of former BCCI and CAB president Jagmohan Dalmiya, took the test on Monday and is currently in home isolation.

Bengal’s preparations for the Ranji Trophy were disrupted on Sunday after seven members of the team tested positive, days before the start of India’s premier domestic cricket tournament.

Bengal were to begin their campaign against Tripura in Bengaluru on 13 January, before taking on Vidarbha, Rajasthan, Kerala and Haryana, their other Group B opponents.

“Keeping in view the prevailing pandemic situation, the Cricket Association of Bengal had conducted RTPCR tests of all Bengal cricketers as a safety measure,” CAB secretary Snehasish Ganguly said in a statement late Sunday evening.

“Results have come to the fore and it has been found that some players had tested positive. CAB is taking all necessary precautions and action in this regard.”

As per reports, six Bengal players — Sudip Chatterjee, Anustup Majumdar, Kazi Junaid Saifi, Geet Puri, Pradipta Pramanik, Surajit Yadav — and assistant coach Sourasish Lahiri were infected with the virus.

The seven were present during an intra-squad warm-up game at the second campus grounds of Jadavpur University in Salt Lake on Sunday.

Positive results from members of the Ranji team also meant that Bengal’s two-day warm-up game against Prithvi Shaw-led Mumbai from Tuesday at the CCFC was called off.
