Aakash Chopra has vouched for Ajinkya Rahane due to the fact that he held the position for a long time.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra says Ajinkya Rahane should be named vice-captain for the upcoming South Africa Test series following Rohit Sharma’s injury. The BCCI has appointed Rohit as Virat Kohli’s deputy, replacing Rahane in the longest format for the upcoming tour.

As Rohit has now been ruled out of the South Africa tour after suffering an injury during the practice session, Chopra feels Rahane should be the logical choice to fill the leadership void.

BCCI may announce a new vice-captain for the three-match Test series in South Africa.

Chopra, however, claimed that during Kohli’s absence for the home Test series against New Zealand, Rahane was instrumental in almost winning the first Test for the team in Kanpur. He also confirmed the middle-order batsman due to the fact that he held the position for a long time and led the team when Kohli sat out.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, “Now you won’t even know who should be made the vice-captain; Is it going to be Ajinkya Rahane, or will he have to find someone else? You have to logically make him the vice-captain because you just made him the captain in Kanpur.”

Rahane has been battling his form for some time now and it is believed that this was the primary reason for Rohit’s appointment as the vice-captain in Tests.

Chopra said that it is practically impossible to make him the vice-captain now and drop him in the next match. He also had doubts on the name of India’s vice-captain.

He feels that India could have done without the vice-captain for the South Africa tour at all. Chopra, however, also released the names of other possible candidates like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin.
