The Election Commission on Monday withdrew the national party status of TMC, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Communist Party of India (CPI).

A party source said that after losing the status of a national party, the Trinamool Congress is exploring legal options to challenge the decision of the Election Commission.

The Election Commission on Monday withdrew the national party status of TMC, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Communist Party of India (CPI).

A TMC source said on Monday, “The party is exploring legal options to challenge this decision of the Election Commission.”

The Mamata Banerjee-led party did not issue any official response.

Opposition BJP mocked TMC after the development.

“TMC has lost the status of a national party and will be recognized as a regional party. There is no place for Didi’s aspiration to develop TMC as people know that TMC runs the most corrupt, appeasement and terror-filled government. The fall of the government is also certain because the people of West Bengal will not tolerate this government for long.

In an order issued on Monday, the Election Commission said that NCP and TMC will be recognized as state parties in Nagaland and Meghalaya, respectively, on the basis of their performance in the recently concluded assembly elections.

TMC was formed on 1 January 1998 after Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Left Congress to form his own political party.

After two failed attempts in 2001 and 2006, the party came to power in 2011, defeating the Left Front, riding a massive public outcry against the Communists.

The party has, in recent years, tried to expand its footprint across the country to mount a direct challenge to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, the efforts did not bear much fruit.

BJP, Congress, CPI (M), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), National People’s Party (NPP) and AAP are now national parties.
