After a delay of 8 years, the way has been cleared for ‘Marathi Bhasha Bhavan’ in Mumbai.

After nearly eight years in cold storage, the much-awaited proposal to build a ‘Marathi Bhasha Bhavan’ in Mumbai was finally cleared by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday.

The building will come up in the existing Jawahar Bal Bhawan complex at Marine Drive and the construction work will start from December this year with a target of 18 months to complete.

Thackeray, along with Marathi Language Minister Subhash Desai and other top officials, witnessed a presentation made by four leading architects for the building on a 2,500-square-metre plot, which has an expo hall, conference hall, library and other facilities to promote intention would be involved. First mooted and approved by the then Congress-Nationalist Congress Party government in 2013, the proposal remained in cold storage while the coalition regime was thrown out of power.

Later, after the BJP-led government came to power in 2014 and 2016, the then concerned minister Vinod Tawde had assured on the floor of the assembly that the proposed building would be completed within a couple of years, but no progress was made.

Incidentally, the previous Congress-NCP government wanted to build it at the defunct Rang Bhawan near Dhobi Talav, but again the proposal got stuck due to silent area restrictions and heritage clearance for that building.

The BJP government, beset by similar problems, started looking for a suitable plot in South Mumbai and even the suburbs, but before it could finalize things, it was voted out of power and ended in November 2019. The Maha Vikas Aghadi government took power in

Finally, a plot of land for the project, considered dear to the ruling allies of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress, was identified in July this year, while construction work was approved on Tuesday.

According to official estimates, the project, which will cost over Rs 80 crore, will be ready before the 2024 assembly elections, giving the three allies a coveted showpiece to take advantage of in the elections.
