According to the report, Zabihullah Mujahid had posted on social media on Saturday about a prayer ceremony for his mother, who died last week. The reported post was due to take place at the mosque on Sunday afternoon, saying “all people and friends are invited to participate”.

“I heard an explosion near the Eid Gah mosque, followed by firing,” a shopkeeper, identified as Ahmadullah, told AFP.

“Just before the blast, the Taliban blocked a road at the Idgah mosque to hold a prayer ceremony for the mother of Zabihullah Mujahid,” he said.

The news agency said its journalists also heard explosions and firing at two places in the capital. An ambulance carrying the injured was seen running towards the emergency hospital in Kabul, it added.

More details about the situation are awaited.
