The Taliban government in Afghanistan said on Sunday that at least 12 people were killed and many others were missing in widespread flooding caused by heavy seasonal rains in the country.

More than 40 people are missing after flash floods hit Jerez district of Afghanistan’s Maidan Wardak province late Saturday night, according to government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, PTI reported.

All concerned authorities have been deployed to provide assistance to the people living in the affected areas.

The heavy rains also damaged hundreds of homes and many people are believed to be trapped under the debris, according to a statement from the Maidan Ward’s governor’s office.

The statement also pointed out that the rains destroyed large swaths of agricultural land and floods closed a highway between Afghanistan’s capital Kabul and Bamiyan province.

Heavy rains have occurred in almost every country in the South Asian region including India, Pakistan and China. Several people have died in Pakistan due to the rains, flooding of roads and streets, suspension of vehicular movement and power outages.
